MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN AND INJURY TREATMENT WITH CORTICOSTEROID INJECTION THERAPY

WHAT IS A CORTICOSTEROID INJECTION?
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we are musculoskeletal specialists that regularly offer corticosteroid injections at our Birmingham and Warwickshire clinics to assist with pain and injury. Corticosteroid injections (otherwise known as steroid or cortisone) are simple, safe, fast anti-inflammatory treatments that act to reduce local inflammation direct at a site of an problem. Anti-inflammatory treatments can be given in the form of tablets i.e. Ibuprofen, or given in the form of an injection which is a much more effective form of treatment as it is administered directly to the source of the problem. A corticosteroid injection can be injected into or around an inflamed injured joint to reduce pain and aid recovery. Steroid injections can work fast or can be delayed but generally speaking, these forms of injections work best in the short term, but thus allowing for functional rehab to commence.
Local steroid or cortisone injections are a prescribed medicine within musculoskeletal medicine that can be a rapid and effective treatment for joint pain and inflammation, although the improvement can just be short lived if preventative care is not performed. Preventative care can allow for long term pain relief.
Corticosteroid injections can also be used for individuals with SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATORY ARTHRITIS to manage inflammatory flares associated with systemic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and other types of inflammatory arthritis. They may also be recommended for osteoarthritis if the joint area is very painful.

At our Birmingham & Warwickshire clinics, we offer CONSULTATION, ASSESSMENT, ULTRASOUND IMAGING (if required), DIAGNOSIS and TREATMENT ALL in the same clinical visit so save you multiple visits. If further investigation is requited (ie MRI) then we can arrange.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS?
Corticosteroid injections are highly effective anti-inflammatory treatments that play a crucial role in alleviating pain and inflammation associated with both acute inflammatory episodes chronic musculoskeletal pain and injuries. These powerful injections are not only beneficial for treating inflammatory flares in systemic autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis but are also effective for addressing other painful issues, including gout. The anti-inflammatory properties of corticosteroids make them a option for managing chronic musculoskeletal conditions that have proven resistant to conservative management approaches.
Steroid injections serve as a vital option for individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and various systemic inflammatory disorders, providing relief when other treatments may have fallen short. The administration of these injections is typically a quick and straightforward process that can be performed with or without the aid of ultrasound guidance. To enhance patient comfort, local anaesthetics are often used to minimise any discomfort associated with the injection. In fact, we are proud to report that over 97% of cortisone injection treatments we carry out result very limited post-treatment discomfort, allowing patients to return to their daily activities with minimal interruption.
Cortisone injections can offer rapid pain relief for a wide range of inflammatory conditions, with effects that may last anywhere from a few weeks to as long as two years. The duration of relief depends on several factors, including the accuracy of the diagnosis, the implementation of preventive care, and the effectiveness of rehabilitative management. This underscores the importance of having these injections performed by musculoskeletal professionals who possess a solid background in musculoskeletal medicine and rehabilitation.
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, our dedicated team is committed to thoroughly assessing your condition and recommending the most suitable treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. We ensure that corticosteroid administration is conducted with precision, your chances of achieving optimal relief and improving your overall quality of life.
IS A CORTICOSTEROID INJECTION RIGHT FOR YOU?
It is extremely important to consult with a musculoskeletal professional to provide an appropriate assessment and diagnosis to see if a corticosteroid injection is the right course of action for your condition.
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, our clinical director Mr Adam Whatley is an experienced musculoskeletal specialist, who has performed many thousands of treatments, who will take time and care investigating your pain or injury, also seeing if cortisone is the correct decision for you. Mr Whatley will then fully explain what the treatment is, how it works, how you are likely to respond, and possible alternatives. If you are suitable for treatment and happy to go ahead, this may also involve gentle hands on joint manipulation and rehabilitation advice.
Administration of the injection is a very simple procedure, after which relative rest may be advised. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, our injections are given as part of a complete treatment package as the steroid injection will often reduce pain but do not resolve the underlying problem. You will therefore be given follow-up treatments to take full advantage of rehabilitation, strengthening and restoring the best mobility.

FOLLOWING YOUR TREATMENT
Following your treatment, relative rest may be advised or at least avoid strenuous exercise, for the first 1-2 days. However, it is also important not to rest for too long. Following the injection, you should undergo a course of treatment rehabilitation to optimise healing and recovery. Furter information will be provided to you following your treatment the best methods for preventative care and management.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS
Corticosteroid injections are generally very safe with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience temporary side effects such as mild swelling, flushing, or tenderness at the injection site. Serious side effects are rare and will be discussed during your consultation.
Most patients have injections without any side effects. Side effects are often weak and short-lived but can include a temporary flare-up of joint pain, infection in rare cases, thinning of the skin or facial flushing. Occasionally, patients can notice a post treatment flare-up within the first 24 hours after injection. This usually settles by itself after a few days. Paracetamol can help with this.
Steroids can occasionally cause some thinning of the skin and fat loss, particularly with stronger mixes.
Signs of infection: every treated region is appropriately sterilised to avoid infection risks. If your treated area becomes more painful and hot you should attend A&E.
People are often concerned about possible side effects such as weight gain. One of the advantages of having an injection compared to tablets is that the dose can be kept low. That means that these side effects are very rare. Furter information is provided on the link here below the image.
Steroid injections are commonly used in conjunction with an appropriate rehabilitation program to help treat the condition.

Fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding
Current guidelines state that steroids are not harmful in pregnancy or breastfeeding so single steroid injections should not affect fertility, pregnancy or breastfeeding. If however, you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should discuss it with your doctor before having the injection.
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we will choose the most appropriate method of treatment for your condition and symptoms. Most injections are quick and easy to perform.

CONDITIONS THAT MAY BENEFIT FROM A CORTICOSTEROID INJECTION
Corticosteroid injections are considered safe and effective for many musculoskeletal conditions. Examples are chronic joint pain injuries and osteoarthritis, where the active medication is used to reduce local pain and inflammation. It is also very frequently used for many soft tissue injuries like ligament and tendon sprains/strains that have failed other conservative treatments. Conditions include:
-
Shoulder pain - rotator cuff inflammation, arthritis or bursitis
-
Elbow pain - tennis and golfer’s elbow or bursitis
-
Wrist pain - tendinitis, ligamentous injury or carpel tunnel syndrome
-
Hand and thumb pain, including arthritis
-
Hip pain - osteoarthritis, tendinitis or bursitis
-
Knee pain - injury, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, ligament injury, cartilage damage and more
-
Foot and ankle pain or injury, including, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis & big toe
-
Spinal pain and injury
It very important to appreciate that success rates, although very good, are often down to many factors - like severity, lifestyle habits and occupation. In certain cases where the severity to too far advanced, surgical option may be required. It is also very important to understand that cortisone injections are not a long term solution for progressive chronic conditions and repeated injections can be counterproductive in some cases. Therefore, it a is very important to discuss this with a musculoskeletal professional to explore all options. Below is some information on PRP injection treatment for example.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we like to focus our treatments on REPAIR and REGENERATION. Due to the toxicity of steroids, we occasionally like to be more in favour of natural treatments that focus on tissue repair platelet rich plasma (PRP) for example. We also like to educate our patients about this and its differences. With this in mind, in some cases we like to often recommend an alternative effective treatment, which is steroid (cortisone) injection with the added addition of hyaluronic acid to aid tissue repair. This can be found under Cingal pain relief injection treatment.
.
NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY INJECTIONS
If the patient is concerned about the side effects then we do offer a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory injection, which is a good natural alternative to steroids, without the unwanted side effects - TRAUMEEL, this is particularly of common use for athletes and practice in sports medicine.
