Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy In Musculoskeletal Medicine

PRP treatment is a very common and popular form of regenerative medicine that is can be used in many different disciplines of medical treatment to stimulate healing and repair. It is known for its exquisite ability to stimulate new tissue proliferation, promote an anti-inflammatory cascade and to stimulate repair. Any form of regenerative medicine uses the natural power of your own cells. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a common example of this whereby it takes advantage of natural healing cells in your blood to repair damaged cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscle and bone. There are various different sources of means whereby cells can be extracted and harvested by your body and used for clinical therapeutic means, but your blood is simple and non-invasive. PRP treatment has been used for the past decade in various different sources of medicine, like oral surgery or cardiac surgery. Over the past few years, clinicians have taken advantage of this and usage is being spread across different areas.

One of those common areas is orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine. PRP therapy is frequently used to reduce pain, stimulate repair and improve function.

How does PRP therapy work?

PRP is used to promote and facilitate your body’s self-healing mechanisms by using your own cells. Our blood contains the super cells we need to live and survive. It contains red cells, white cells and platelets. The platelets are important for blood clotting blood but they also contain bioactive proteins called growth factors which are used in the healing of injuries and damaged tissue. With a much higher concentration of growth factors than typically found in blood, PRP injections promote repair of injured tissue at the same time as reducing inflammation.

What musculoskeletal conditions can be treated with PRP?

What is the PRP procedure?

The procedure is safe, quick and simple. It will take 30 minutes. During this time:

A blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm. Then we extract and harvest a high concentration of platelets from your blood using a centrifuge machine. We then use this high concentration of platelets to treat the desired area. During this period your clinician will carry out some joint mobilisations to promote the mobility of the joint being treated. Our PRP treatments are carried out in a very speedy fashion and pain or discomfort is kept to an absolute minimum. In fact, the majority of our patients are able to carry out their normal daily routine on the same day of treatment, although relative rest is advised. During this time, specialised platelets release bioactive growth factors that stimulate repairing healing. The treatment is generally every 3/4 weeks, for up to 3 treatments. Since the treatment is prepared from your own blood cells, the treatment carries a very low risk and side effects are generally very uncommon. The number of injections required depends on the injury.
