KNEE MENISCUS INJURY TREATMENT BIRMINGHAMUK

Meniscus injuries are extremely common knee injuries, and the correct treatment is fundamentally important for the overall knee joint health. Our very experienced clinicians have been treating knee pain and injury for over 15 years and have gained an excellent reputation in this very complex common area. It is our primary objective to reduce knee painspeed up recovery, improve knee function, slow the progression of cartilage degradation and get people back to their normal daily activities and occupation as soon as possible without causing further trauma that can ultimately lead to increased degenerative changes.

What are the causes of Meniscus injury?

Meniscus injuries are very common in sport and normal daily activities. It is often due to trauma, more specifically, when the foot is planted and there is excessive knee twisting. This then can cause over compression and consequently cause a tearing, which can be graded from mild to severe. Other causes involve accidents/trauma, knee instability and genetic predisposition. A meniscus tear will often lead to increased pain, weakness and swelling. It is very important to get treated straight away to speed up recovery and reduce progressive degenerative changes of the joint cartilage.

Symptoms of meniscus injury

  • Stiffness

  • Pain

  • Swelling

  • Difficulty walking and climbing

  • Giving way

  • Locking

  • Weakness

It is always important to be aware of more alternative factors of knee pain, like autoimmune related systemic inflammatory arthritis. Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged morning joint stiffness, increased swelling, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling down the leg, ongoing cramps in the legs,  fatigue, weight loss and night pain.

MENISCUS INJURY TREATMENT

Knee meniscus injury treatment will always depend on the severity of the tear. In the initial acute stages, RICE principles are always used - rest, ice, compression and elevation. Mild tearing can often be managed conservatively with appropriate rehabilitative strengthening and stabilisation work. The knee heavily relies on the meniscus for load distribution and congruency. Certain stubborn cases may respond well to injection therapies, like PRP therapy, to speed up repair and healing. We know that knee meniscus can often be a challenge to treat as they do not get any blood supply, they have to rely on nutrients and healing cells from the synovial joint fluid. This is why surgical removal/repair is so often carried out on the knee meniscus, especially in severe tears, where the joint is compromised. Where instability is apparent, a knee brace may be recommended.

Meniscus tears can be graded in 4 depending on severity. As a general rule, 1 and 2 can often be managed conservatively with appropriate rehabilitation. 3 may warrant surgical opinion, non-surgical cases can be managed with longer rehab and PRP as an adjunctive therapy to aid repair and strengthen. 4 meniscal repair surgery.

Knee meniscus injury can range in severity. Ultimately, the aim is to reduce pain and speed up recovery. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, knee injuries are very common complaints we see. We always relay to every patient the importance of treating knee injuries early, to avoid further complications, like joint cartilage issues. The long term aim is always to preserve cartilage health.

Where possible, we like to enforce conservative treatment and management of mild to moderate meniscus injuries, but in certain cases, extra resources are needed and encouraged. If patients are showing signs of advanced meniscus injury, then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic clarity of the severity and to see if surgical intervention may be required.

If surgical intervention is not required and the injury is not quite responding to physiotherapy, then as mentioned above we may recommend the use of PRP therapy, which is quite often used to promote healing of damaged tissues. We have built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for knee pain and injury. The most popular by far being P-PRP injection treatment, in which patients travel from all over the UK to see us for treatment (further information can be found on the ORTHOBIOLOGICS link below).

Referral for Specialist Imaging or Private MRI Scans

At our knee pain clinics in Birmingham and Warwickshire, we can provide ultrasound imaging to look for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. However, the knee joint can require a more in-depth analysis using an MRI. If a private MRI scan is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre in Solihull. You will then be booked in within a few days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist. This report will then come back to us and will we then discuss with you the best course of treatment for your complaint.

In cases where the disease progression is too severe, or the problem is not getting better, then we may refer to our trusted colleagues Mr Jamie Arbuthnot (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) or Prof Martin Snow (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) for surgical opinion.

Knee Pain and Meniscus Injury Assessment

To address your knee injury, the first step is to conduct a basic functional assessment to determine its severity. If your knee injury is not improving or is affecting your daily activities, it's advisable to consult a musculoskeletal professional. They will perform an assessment, gather information for a diagnosis, and recommend the most effective treatment and management strategies to help you regain optimal function. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, knee pain and injuries among the most frequently encountered issues we address daily. Our skilled musculoskeletal clinician, Mr Adam Whatley, is equipped to assess, diagnose, and treat a variety of knee pain conditions, from sports injuries to osteoarthritis.

INJECTION THERAPIES FOR KNEE CARTILAGE HEALTH & PRESERVATION

Knee injuries involving ligaments, tendons, or cartilage can sometimes lead to chronic pain. In such instances, the body may require additional support to promote healing and recovery. Injection therapy is often utilised to address knee pain, injuries, and osteoarthritis, proving effective in many cases The most prevalent forms of injection therapies include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and hyaluronic (gel) injections.

INJECTION TREATMENT FOR KNEE CARTILAGE HEALTH

Hyaluronic Acid Injection Therapy

Hyaluronic acid (gel) injections are widely recognised for their effectiveness in treating cartilage damage and osteoarthritis a prevalent joint condition characterised by the gradual deterioration of cartilage. These popular joint injections serve a dual: they not only help to alleviate pain but also play an essential role in preserving cartilage health. By replenishing the synovial fluid, which acts as a natural lubricant and provides cushioning in the joints, hyaluronic acid injections improve joint function and reduce inflammation. Patients often experience significant relief from discomfort, enabling them to engage in daily activities with greater ease and confidence. As part of a comprehensive plan, these injections can enhance the quality of life for individuals suffering from osteoarthritis, offering a non-surgical option that promotes long-term joint health and mobility. Regular consultations with healthcare providers can ensure the best outcomes and tailor treatments to individual needs. Advanved cases of osteoarthritis can be more dificult to treat.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection Therapy

Hugely growing in popularity, platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment is a safe natural treatment commonly used in many different cases of musculoskeletal pain and injury, that uses platelets from the patient’s blood to promote and facilitate healing and repair in damaged tissue. Increased scientific literature from evidence-based clinical trials are increasingly showing that platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection treatment is safe and effective for the treatment of knee pain, knee osteoarthritis and injury, also have improved benefits over cortisone, particularly for long term progress. Further information can be found by following this link.
