WHAT IS ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA?
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is also referred to as common pattern balding or hereditary balding alopecia. It is the most common form of hair loss in men and women mediated by the effects of androgens on susceptible hairs. Aside from genetic predisposition, the overproduction of androgens can be a factored cause or worsening of androgenetic alopecia. The typical clinical pattern observed in AGA begins with recession of the frontal hairline followed by thinning of the vertex scalp with ultimate fusion of the two areas as the condition progresses. In women, there is widening of the central part of the frontal scalp, with sparing of the frontal hairline is also characteristic in women.

TREATMENT FOR ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA

MINOXIDIL
Applying 2% or 5% minoxidil solution to the scalp may help to slow down the progression of hair loss in relation to androgenetic alopecia in males and females. However, minoxidil is not brilliant for actual regrowth of hairs. Furthermore, continuation of daily treatment is required which can be expensive. Intermittent use of minoxidil can promote further hair loss. In those who respond, the benefit is only maintained for as long as the treatment is used. Minoxidil has also been known to cause scalp irritant in some. Continuous use for 3 to 6 months is required before a benefit is usually seen.
FINASTERIDE
For men, finasteride tablets reduce levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which may slow the progression of hair loss and possibly help regrowth of hair in some. Continuous use for 3 to 6 months is required before a benefit is usually seen. Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction are recognised side-effects of this treatment. Continuation of treatment is normally required, any beneficial effects on hair growth will be lost within 6 to 12 months of discontinuing treatment.
FOR INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN THIS TREATMENT ROUTE, HERE AT DYNAMIC REGENERATIVE MEDICINE, WE OFFER PRESCRIPTION FINASTREIDE OR TOPICAL FINASTERIDE WITH MINOXIDIL WHICH HOLDS REDUCED SIDE EFFECTS.

Dutasteride is another similar medication called an 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Finasteride and dutasteride both work to prevent the conversion of testosterone into a different type of androgen hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is DHT that is strongly linked to hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness. While finasteride and dutasteride both work to block DHT, it is very important to understand the pros and cons of such drugs Further information can be found here.
