WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF KNEE PAIN AND INJURY?
Knee pain is the second biggest cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability, due to its huge complexity. It can range from short bursts of localised discomfort through to extremely significant amounts of pain. Most cases of knee pain and injury are triggered by a combination of, postural mis-alignment, overuse, repetitive strain, injury (or trauma), and inflammation to the structures of the knee. Severity varies, but below are some examples of common causes of knee pain and injury.

COMMON TYPES OF KNEE PAIN
-
Soft tissue injury to muscles, tendons, ligaments
-
ACL/PCL trauma
-
Meniscus damage
-
Patello-femoral pain
-
Osteoarthritis
-
Spinal referred pain
-
Bursitis
ACUTE VS CHRONIC KNEE PAIN
-
ACUTE PAIN is often due to direct trauma or injuries such as ligament tears, or sprains.
-
CHRONIC PAIN may be a results from progressive wear and tear, repetitive strain, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.
It is extremely important to be aware of more sinister causes of knee pain, like inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis...). Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged morning joint stiffness, increased swelling, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling down the leg, ongoing cramps in the legs, fatigue, weight loss and night pain.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON KNEE CONDITIONS WE TREAT?
At our Birmingham Knee Pain Clinic, we specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of knee issues using a wide range of treatments, including regenerative and nonsurgical therapies. Below is a list of some of the most common issues we address in our clinics across Birmingham and Warwickshire.
Gradual progressive cartilage degeneration causing pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced functional mobility.
Pain at the front and behind the knee cap, often due to imbalances, sports and overuse.

Inflammation of the patellar tendon often due to sports, or overuse.
Ligaments are strong connective tissues that stabilise joints. Sprains or tears, such as ACL, MCL, LCL, or PCL injuries are common following trauma, twisting movements, or sports-related activities.
The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that cushions the knee. Damage or tearing often results from sudden twists or degeneration over time, causing joint pain and instability.
This condition occurs when the bursa (small fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction) becomes inflamed. It commonly affects the knees, shoulders, hips, or elbows.

Referral for Specialist Imaging or Private MRI Scans
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, our knee pain clinic in Birmingham can provide ultrasound imaging to look for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. However, on occasions we may require a more in-depth analysis. If a private MRI scan is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre in Solihull. You will then be contacted and booked in within the next few days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by our colleague Dr David Beale (Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist). This report will then come back to us and will we then interpret the images and discuss with you then best course of treatment for your complaint.
In some cases we may refer to our trusted colleagues Mr Jamie Arbuthnot (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) or Prof Martin Snow (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) for surgical opinion.
Fortunately, many cases of knee pain and injuries we see here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine can be dealt with and treated successfully with conservative treatment modalities. However, we have built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for knee pain. The most popular by far being P-PRP injection treatment, in which patients travel from all over the UK to see us for treatment (further information can also be found on the ORTHOBIOLOGICS link below). If patients do not respond adequately to conservative treatment or the problem is getting worse, then consideration for injection therapy may be discussed. If patients are showing signs of advanced injury or disease, then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning to get diagnostic clarity of what it is that may be causing the issue. Generally speaking, based from a sound justifiable working diagnosis, not all vases may need imaging prior to treatment.
If a cause of your knee pain is suspected to be of an inflammatory, autoimmune or rheumatological origin, then you will be asked to provide a blood test and lab panel to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and TNFa, and maybe immunological makers.
To help your knee pain, we firstly need to know what may be causing the issue. To do this we have to provide a thorough knee pain and injury assessment. If you have been having knee pain which does not appear to be improving or is impacting on your function, it is recommended to see a musculoskeletal professional. This experienced clinician will be able to provide a full assessment, gain information to make a diagnosis and provide the best treatment and management strategies to resolve your knee pain or injury and get you back to full function again. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, knee pain and injury is one of the most common issues we see many times every day.
Our experienced musculoskeletal clinician, Mr Adam Whatley will be able to provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of knee pain conditions from sport injuries, performance activities through to the management and rehabilitation of complex conditions.
