WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF KNEE PAIN AND INJURY?

Knee pain is the second biggest cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability, due to its huge complexity. It can range from short bursts of localised discomfort through to extremely significant amounts of pain. Most cases of knee pain and injury are triggered by a combination of, postural mis-alignment, overuse, repetitive strain, injury (or trauma), and inflammation to the structures of the knee. Severity varies, but below are some examples of common causes of knee pain and injury.

Knee pain treatment Birmingham

COMMON TYPES OF KNEE PAIN

  • Soft tissue injury to muscles, tendons, ligaments

  • ACL/PCL trauma

  • Meniscus damage

  • Patello-femoral pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Spinal referred pain

  • Bursitis

ACUTE VS CHRONIC KNEE PAIN

  • ACUTE PAIN is often due to direct trauma or injuries such as ligament tears, or sprains.

  • CHRONIC PAIN  may be a results from progressive wear and tear, repetitive strain, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.

It is extremely important to be aware of more sinister causes of knee pain, like inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis...). Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged morning joint stiffness, increased swelling, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling down the leg, ongoing cramps in the legs,  fatigue, weight loss and night pain.

WHAT ARE THE COMMON KNEE CONDITIONS WE TREAT?

At our Birmingham Knee Pain Clinic, we specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of knee issues using a wide range of treatments, including regenerative and nonsurgical therapies. Below is a list of some of the most common issues we address in our clinics across Birmingham and Warwickshire.

Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition caused by progressive cartilage wear within the joint, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we focus on joint preservation using conservative management via manual and physical therapies (osteopathy & physiotherapy), and advanced injection therapies designed to reduce inflammation, improve lubrication, support cartilage health, and delay the need for surgery. These treatments are combined with targeted rehabilitation to improve strength and function.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Anterior Knee Pain)

Pain at the front and behind the knee cap, often due to imbalances, sports and overuse. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is often related to poor kneecap tracking, muscle imbalance, or overload. Injection therapy in combination with conservative management via manual and physical therapies (osteopathy & physiotherapy) can be used to reduce inflammation within the joint or surrounding soft tissues, allowing patients to engage more effectively in mobility, strengthening and corrective rehabilitation aimed at long-term pain resolution.

Patellar tendinitis is an overuse injury affecting the tendon below the kneecap, commonly seen in active individuals and athletes. Our clinic offers image-guided injection therapies to stimulate tendon healing, reduce pain, and improve tendon quality, alongside progressive loading and strengthening programmes to restore full knee function.

Ligament injuries can occur following trauma, twisting injuries, or sporting activities, resulting in pain, instability, and swelling. Injection therapy can support ligament healing by reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair, while structured rehabilitation helps restore knee stability and confidence during movement.

Meniscus injuries involve damage to the cartilage that cushions and stabilises the knee joint. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, locking, or catching sensations. We focus on joint preservation using conservative management via manual and physical therapies (osteopathy & physiotherapy), and advanced injection therapies designed to reduce inflammation, protect cartilage health, and improve joint mechanics, often avoiding the need for surgery.

Knee Bursitis

Bursitis occurs when the small fluid-filled sacs around the knee become inflamed due to pressure, repetitive kneeling, or overuse. Injection therapy can provide effective pain relief by aspiration of large amounts of fluid and reducing inflammation, allowing patients to return to activity while addressing the underlying mechanical or postural contributors.

Cartilage Injuries and Chondral Defects

Cartilage damage within the knee can result from injury or gradual degeneration, leading to pain and swelling during activity. Our injection-based treatments aim to support cartilage preservation, improve joint environment, and reduce further wear, particularly when combined with biomechanical optimisation and rehabilitation.

Post-Traumatic Knee Pain

Following accidents or sports injuries, patients may experience persistent knee pain despite initial healing. Injection therapy can play a key role in managing ongoing inflammation, supporting tissue recovery, and enabling a safe return to exercise and daily activities.

The Role of Injection Therapy in Knee Pain Management

At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, injection therapy is a cornerstone of our knee pain treatment approach. Image-guided injections allow us to precisely target the source of pain, reduce inflammation, support cartilage health, and preserve joint function. When combined with expert rehabilitation and movement correction, these treatments can significantly improve pain, mobility, and long-term knee health.

Why you may Choose Injection Therapy for Knee Pain?

Injection therapy allows us to deliver treatment directly to the source of pain within the knee joint or surrounding soft tissues. Using image-guided precision, we can reduce inflammation, improve joint lubrication, and create an optimal environment for healing. This often leads to faster pain relief, improved mobility, and better engagement with rehabilitation.

Supporting Cartilage Health and Joint Preservation

For many knee conditions, particularly osteoarthritis and cartilage injuries, the goal is not just pain relief but long-term joint preservation. Our injection treatments are designed to support cartilage health, reduce ongoing wear, and slow degenerative changes within the knee, helping patients maintain function and delay or avoid surgical intervention.

Combining Injections with Expert Rehabilitation

Injection therapy is most effective when combined with a structured rehabilitation programme. By reducing pain and inflammation first, patients are able to move more freely, strengthen key muscle groups, and correct biomechanical faults. This integrated approach leads to more durable outcomes and reduces the risk of recurrence.

Referral for Specialist Imaging or Private MRI Scans

At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, our knee pain clinic in Birmingham can provide ultrasound imaging to look for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. However, on occasions we may require a more in-depth analysis. If a private MRI scan is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre in Solihull. You will then be contacted and booked in within the next few days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by our colleague Dr David Beale (Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist). This report will then come back to us and will we then interpret the images and discuss with you then best course of treatment for your complaint.

In some cases we may refer to our trusted colleagues Mr Jamie Arbuthnot (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) or Prof Martin Snow (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) for surgical opinion.

Fortunately, many cases of knee pain and injuries we see here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine can be dealt with and treated successfully with conservative treatment modalities. However, we have built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for knee pain. The most popular by far being P-PRP injection treatment, in which patients travel from all over the UK to see us for treatment (further information can also be found on the ORTHOBIOLOGICS link below). If patients do not respond adequately to conservative treatment or the problem is getting worse, then consideration for injection therapy may be discussed. If patients are showing signs of advanced injury or disease, then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning to get diagnostic clarity of what it is that may be causing the issue. Generally speaking, based from a sound justifiable working diagnosis, not all vases may need imaging prior to treatment.

If a cause of your knee pain is suspected to be of an inflammatory, autoimmune or rheumatological origin, then you will be asked to provide a blood test and lab panel to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and TNFa, and maybe immunological makers.
