COMMON CAUSES OF SHOULDER PAIN

Shoulder pain and injury is one of the most common causes of pain and disability, and it something we see and treat multiple times everyday here at our pain and injury clinic in Birmingham. This is due to the vast mobility the shoulder has, with long leverage. Pain and injury can be short local irritation through to significant levels of disability and poor quality of life. Most cases of shoulder pain, especially rotator cuff injury, are triggered by a combination of poor posture, overuse, repetitive strain, injury and inflammation to local structures. Severity can vary, but below are some examples of common causes of shoulder pain and injury.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SHOULDER PAIN

  • Soft tissue injury to muscles, tendons, ligaments

  • Rotator cuff damage

  • Neck spinal nerve referral

  • Shoulder bursitis

  • AC injury

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Shoulder joint arthritis

ACUTE VS CHRONIC SHOULDER PAIN

  • ACUTE PAIN is often due to direct trauma or injuries such as ligament tears, tendinitis, or sprains.

  • CHRONIC PAIN  may be a results from progressive wear and tear or soft tissues or joints, repetitive strain, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.

It is extremely important to be aware of more sinister causes of shoulder pain, like inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis...). Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged morning joint stiffness, increased swelling, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling down the arms, ongoing cramps,  fatigue, weight loss and night pain.

Below, you can find a list of some of the most issues we address in our clinics across Birmingham and Warwickshire, showcasing our commitment to helping you on your journey to recovery.

An acute or chronic injury to the rotator cuff muscles, which play a crucial role in stabilising the shoulder joint, can lead to many complications. This very common type of injury often results inflammation, persistent pain, tendinitis, and a decline in shoulder function. In some cases, it may even impact the muscles or tendons, further compromising mobility and strength in the shoulder area. Prompt attention and appropriate treatment are essential to alleviate symptoms and restore shoulder function.

This condition develops when the bursa, which are small fluid sacs responsible for reducing friction between tissues in the body, becomes inflamed. This inflammation leads to discomfort and pain, commonly affecting areas such as the knees, shoulders, hips, or elbows. As a result, individuals may experience limitations in their range of motion and daily activities. Understanding causes and symptoms of this condition is essential for effective management and treatment.

Poor shoulder function combined with repetitive activities can often lead to the impingement of the shoulder rotator cuff tendons and the sub-acromial bursa. This condition may result in significant pain and dysfunction, affecting activities and overall quality of life. It is important to address these issues early to prevent further complications and ensure proper shoulder health. Engaging in targeted exercises and seeking professional guidance can help alleviate these symptoms and restore normal function.

Ligaments are strong and resilient connective tissues that play a crucial role in stabilising joints throughout the body. They connect bones to other bones, ensuring proper and movement. Unfortunately, sprains or tears of these ligaments can be common occurrences, especially in situations involving traumatic injuries, dislocations, or during various sports-related activities. Understanding the importance of ligaments and the potential for injury can help individuals take necessary precautions to protect their joint health during physical activities.

Gradual progressive cartilage degeneration in the shoulder can lead to significant discomfort and limitations in daily activities. As the cartilage breaks down over time, individuals may experience increasing pain, stiffness, and swelling in the shoulder joint. This condition can ultimately result in reduced functional, making it challenging to perform tasks such as lifting objects or reaching overhead. Addressing these symptoms early on can help manage pain and maintain function.

The superior bicep tendon has a very important role in stabilising the front of the shoulder joint. Inflammation and pain can occur in the front of the shoulder as a result of repetitive irritation of the bicep tendon situated in that area. This condition often arises from activities that involve overhead movements or repetitive lifting, leading to discomfort and restricted mobility. It is important to address these symptoms early on to prevent further complications and promote healing.

Fortunately, many cases of shoulder pain we see and treat here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine in Birmingham and Warwickshire are treated successfully with conservative treatment therapy. We are very proud of the fact that less that 10% of our shoulder pain patients are considered for invasive surgical treatment. However, this does depend of the severity of the condition. If patients do not respond adequately to conservative treatment or the problem is worsening, then consideration for injection therapy may be discussed, if surgical opinion is not required. If patients are showing signs of rotator cuff damage or joint osteoarthritis then we may discuss the need for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic conformation of what it is that may be causing the concern.

If an inflammatory or rheumatological cause of your shoulder pain is suspected, then you may be asked to get a lab panel and blood test done to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and maybe immunological makers.

We have also built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for shoulder pain. The most popular by far being P-PRP injection treatment, in which patients travel from all over the UK to see us for treatment (further information can also be found on the ORTHOBIOLOGICS link below)

Referral for Specialist Imaging or Private MRI Scans

At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, our shoulder pain clinic in Birmingham can provide ultrasound imaging to examine for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. But, occasionally, we may require a more in-depth analysis. When a private scan is considered, we will put through a referral to our local Imaging Centre. You will then be contacted and booked in within 5-10 days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by our colleague Dr David Beale (Consultant Radiologist). This report will then come back to us and will we then interpret the images and discuss with you then best course of treatment for your complaint.

In some cases, where surgical opinion is required, we may refer to our trusted colleagues Mr Samir Massoud (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon).
