Common causes of shoulder pain

Shoulder pain and injury is one of the most common causes of pain and disability, and it something we see and treat multiple times everyday here at the Dynamic Clinic. This is due to the vast mobility the shoulder has, with long leverage. Pain and injury can be short local irritation through to significant levels of disability and poor quality of life. Most cases of shoulder pain, especially rotator cuff injury, are triggered by a combination of poor posture, overuse, repetitive strain, injury and inflammation to local structures. Severity can vary, but below are some examples of common causes of shoulder pain and injury.

Fortunately, many cases of shoulder pain we see and treat here at Dynamic Clinic in Birmingham are treated successfully with conservative treatment therapy. We are very proud of the fact that less that 10% of our shoulder pain patients are considered for invasive therapeutic treatment. However, this does depend of the severity of causes. If patients do not respond adequately to conservative treatment or the problem is worsening, then consideration for injection therapy may be discussed. If patients are showing signs of rotator cuff damage or joint osteoarthritis then we may discuss the need for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic conformation of what it is that may be causing the concern.

If an inflammatory or rheumatological cause of your shoulder pain is suspected, then you may be asked to get a lab panel and blood test done to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and maybe immunological makers.

Referral for Private Specialist Imaging and MRI Scans

At at the Dynamic Clinic we can provide ultrasound imaging to examine for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. But, occasionally, we may require a more in-depth analysis. When a private scan is considered, we will put through a referral to our local Imaging Centre. You will then be contacted and booked in within 5-10 days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by our colleague Dr David Beale (Consultant Radiologist). The report will then come back to us and will we then discuss with you then best action to take.

In some cases, where surgical opinion is required, we may refer to our trusted colleagues Mr Samir Massoud (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon).
