ULTRASOUND-GUIDED INJECTION TREATMENT FOR ELBOW PAIN AND TENDINITIS

Have you been suffering from elbow pain or golfer's elbow? This is very common condition, clinically known as medial epicondylitis. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, this is a common condition we see many times every day, and our experienced clinicians have been treating elbow pain and injuries for many years, gaining an excellent reputation in area. We can provide various types of treatments for elbow pain and injuries that may be suitable for you.

COMMON CAUSES OF GOLFER'S ELBOW (TENDINITIS)

Elbow pain caused by tennis or golfer's elbow is a very common source of musculoskeletal pain and can lead to significant disruption in normal daily activities and occupations. These common forms of and medial and lateral elbow tendinitis are primarily caused by repetitive overuse of the forearm muscles, often resulting in significant pain and reduced function. Other causes often rekate to ocuupational overuse and power/vibration tools. Cases of tennis elbow pain are due to inflammation of the common extensor forearm tendons at their insertion on the outside of the elbow bone. This is known as insertional tendinitis, or more specifically, epicondylitis. Severity can vary ranging from mild to moderate to severe.

SYMPTOMS OF GOLFER'S ELBOW

  • Elbow stiffness

  • Elbow pain

  • Swelling

  • Referred pain into the forearm

  • Pain using hand or elbow

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ACUTE & CHRONIC ELBOW PAIN

  • ACUTE PAIN is often due to direct trauma or injuries such as ligament tears, or sprains.

  • CHRONIC PAIN  may be a results from progressive wear and tear, repetitive strain, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.

It is extremely important to be aware of more sinister causes of elbow pain, like inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis…) or gout. Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged joint stiffness, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling down the arm, heat,  fatigue, weight loss and night pain.

COMMON ELBOW CONDITIONS WE SEE AND TREAT

At our Birmingham Elbow Pain Clinic, we focus on diagnosing and treating variety of elbow issues through a range of treatments, including regenerative and nonsurgical therapies. Elbow pain and dysfunction can arise from overuse, trauma, inflammation, or joint degeneration. Below is a list of common conditions linked to elbow pain:

Tennis elbow results from the excessive use or strain of the forearm extensor tendons, resulting in pain on the outer part of the elbow. It often impacts both athletes and non-athletes engaged in repetitive gripping or lifting activities. Guided injection therapy can alleviate tendon inflammation and pain, promote tendon health, and facilitate more effective rehabilitation and long-term recovery.

Golfer’s elbow impacts the tendons on the inner part of the elbow and is commonly linked to repetitive activities wrist flexion or gripping. Symptoms typically include pain, weakness, and diminished grip strength. Injection therapy can alleviate inflammation and support tendon healing, allowing patients to advance in strengthening and load-management programs.

Elbow bursitis happens when the bursa, a fluid-filled sac located at the back of the elbow, becomes inflamed due to pressure, injury, or repetitive leaning. This leads to swelling, tenderness, and discomfort when moving the elbow. Targeted injection therapy can alleviate inflammation and pain, promoting a quicker recovery of normal elbow function.

Triceps Tendinopathy

Triceps tendinopathy causes pain at the back of the elbow, particularly during pushing, pressing, or overhead activities. It is common in weight training and throwing sports. Image-guided injection therapy can reduce tendon pain and support tissue recovery, patients to safely rebuild strength and load tolerance through rehabilitation.

Biceps Tendinopathy (Distal Biceps)

Distal biceps tendinopathy affects the tendon at the front of the elbow and can cause pain during lifting, pulling, or twisting movements. Injection therapy can help reduce inflammation and discomfort while supporting tendon health, enabling improved function and progression with targeted strengthening exercises.

Advanced Injection Therapy

Injection therapy plays a key role in managing elbow pain by targeting inflamed tendons or bursae with precision. Image-guided techniques improve accuracy, enhance pain relief, and support tissue healing, helping patients return to work, training, and daily activities more comfortably.

Sports-Related Elbow Injuries

Elbow injuries common in sports that involve gripping, throwing, or repetitive arm loading, such as tennis, golf, climbing, CrossFit, weight, and rugby. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we utilise a sports-focused approach that combines injection with progressive rehabilitation to reduce pain, restore strength, and improve load tolerance.

Cartilage Health and Joint Preservation

For many elbow conditions, particularly tendinitis and cartilage injuries, the goal is not just pain relief but long-term tissue and joint preservation. Our injection treatments are designed to support healing and cartilage health, reduce ongoing wear, and slow degenerative changes within the elbow, helping patients maintain function and delay or avoid surgical intervention.

Expert Rehabilitation

Injection therapy is most effective when combined with a structured rehabilitation programme. By reducing pain and inflammation first, patients are able to move more freely, strengthen key muscle groups, and correct biomechanical faults. This integrated approach leads to more durable outcomes and reduces the risk of recurrence.

Elbow Pain and Golfer's Elbow Assessment and Diagnosis

To assist you with your elbow pain and injury, begin with a functional assessment to pinpoint potential causes. If you are persistent elbow pain or an injury that affects your daily activities, we recommend consulting a musculoskeletal professional for a comprehensive evaluation. Golfer's elbow and tennis elbow (epicondylitis) are very common conditions that can come from many different forms. Ultimately, we look to reduce pain, improve function and prevent the issue from returning. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, elbow tendinitis is a very common issue we see and treat many times every day. We always explain to patients how important it is to treat elbow tendinitis early, to treat and prevent any degenerative changes of important tissues. Like many musculoskeletal conditions, the longer it goes on untreated, the more difficult it can be to treat.

Where possible, we like to enforce conservative treatment and management of elbow pain and tendinitis. But in some cases, extra resources may be required. We have built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for tennis elbow and golfers elbow. The most popular being P-PRP injection treatment, in which patients travel from all over the UK to see us for treatment (further information can be found on the ORTHOBIOLOGICS link below). If individuals are showing signs of advanced injury or disease then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic clarity of what it is that may be causing the issue.

If a cause of your elbow pain is suspected to be of an inflammatory or rheumatological origin, then you will be asked to provide a blood test and lab panel to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and TNFa, and maybe immunological makers.

Referral for Specialist Imaging or Private MRI Scans

At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we can provide ultrasound imaging to look for signs of swelling, inflammation or tissue damage. However, in some cases a more in-depth analysis may be required with the assistance of our radiology colleagues. If a private scan is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre in Solihull. You will then be booked in within 5-10 days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by a Musculoskeletal Radiologist. This report will then come back to the Dynamic Clinic and will we then discuss with you then best course of treatment for your compliant.

In cases where the disease progression is too severe, or the problem is not getting better, then we may refer to our trusted orthopaedic colleagues for surgical opinion.

INJECTION TREATMENT FOR GOLFER'S ELBOW

Modern lifestyles can sometimes lead to chronic elbow pain and tendinitis, including golfer's elbow and tennis elbow, which can be difficult to treat. In such instances, alternative treatment options are available. Injection therapy commonly utilised for tennis elbow, offering effective pain relief in persistent cases. This therapy may include cortisone injections or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.

INJECTION TREATMENT FOR GOLFER'S ELBOW

People experiencing these injury conditions who have not improved with conservative treatment may be to consider a cortisone injection for pain relief. It is important to note that steroid injections do not work for everyone, and when they do, the relief may be temporary without proper maintenance and ongoing care. Furthermore, repeated injections can lead to degeneration of the surrounding tissues. While cortisone injections can help with inflammation, they are not typically used for chronic elbow due to the risk of developing tolerance and potential weakening of tissues. That being said, they can also play a very important role in reducing your pain to promote your mobility and strengthening.

Hugely growing in popularity, PRP injection treatment is a safe, well tolerated, natural treatment, commonly used in many different cases of musculoskeletal pain and injury. PRP treatment uses platelets from the patient’s blood to promote and facilitate healing and repair in damaged and injured tissue. Increased scientific literature from evidence-based clinical trials are increasingly showing how PRP injection treatment is safe and effective for the treatment of elbow tendinitis, also having superior benefits over cortisone, particularly for long term progress.
