COMMON CAUSES OF GOLFER'S ELBOW (TENDINITIS)
Elbow pain caused by tennis or golfer's elbow is a very common source of musculoskeletal pain and can lead to significant disruption in normal daily activities and occupations. These common forms of and medial and lateral elbow tendinitis are primarily caused by repetitive overuse of the forearm muscles, often resulting in significant pain and reduced function. Other causes often rekate to ocuupational overuse and power/vibration tools. Cases of tennis elbow pain are due to inflammation of the common extensor forearm tendons at their insertion on the outside of the elbow bone. This is known as insertional tendinitis, or more specifically, epicondylitis. Severity can vary ranging from mild to moderate to severe.

ACUTE PAIN is often due to direct trauma or injuries such as ligament tears, or sprains.

CHRONIC PAIN may be a results from progressive wear and tear, repetitive strain, or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.
It is extremely important to be aware of more sinister causes of elbow pain, like inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis…) or gout. Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged joint stiffness, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling down the arm, heat, fatigue, weight loss and night pain.

Elbow bursitis happens when the bursa, a fluid-filled sac located at the back of the elbow, becomes inflamed due to pressure, injury, or repetitive leaning. Golfer's elbow and tennis elbow (epicondylitis) are very common conditions that can come from many different forms. Ultimately, we look to reduce pain, improve function and prevent the issue from returning. At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, elbow tendinitis is a very common issue we see and treat many times every day. We always explain to patients how important it is to treat elbow tendinitis early, to treat and prevent any degenerative changes of important tissues. Like many musculoskeletal conditions, the longer it goes on untreated, the more difficult it can be to treat.
Where possible, we like to enforce conservative treatment and management of elbow pain and tendinitis. But in some cases, extra resources may be required. We have built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for tennis elbow and golfers elbow. If individuals are showing signs of advanced injury or disease then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic clarity of what it is that may be causing the issue.
If a cause of your elbow pain is suspected to be of an inflammatory or rheumatological origin, then you will be asked to provide a blood test and lab panel to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and TNFa, and maybe immunological makers.
Referral for Specialist Imaging or Private MRI Scans
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we can provide ultrasound imaging to look for signs of swelling, inflammation or tissue damage. However, in some cases a more in-depth analysis may be required with the assistance of our radiology colleagues. If a private scan is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre in Solihull. You will then be booked in within 5-10 days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by a Musculoskeletal Radiologist. This report will then come back to the Dynamic Clinic and will we then discuss with you then best course of treatment for your compliant.
In cases where the disease progression is too severe, or the problem is not getting better, then we may refer to our trusted orthopaedic colleagues for surgical opinion.
INJECTION TREATMENT FOR GOLFER'S ELBOW
Modern lifestyles can sometimes lead to chronic elbow pain and tendinitis, including golfer's elbow and tennis elbow, which can be difficult to treat. In such instances, alternative treatment options are available. Injection therapy commonly utilised for tennis elbow, offering effective pain relief in persistent cases. This therapy may include cortisone injections or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.
People experiencing these injury conditions who have not improved with conservative treatment may be to consider a cortisone injection for pain relief. It is important to note that steroid injections do not work for everyone, and when they do, the relief may be temporary without proper maintenance and ongoing care. Furthermore, repeated injections can lead to degeneration of the surrounding tissues. While cortisone injections can help with inflammation, they are not typically used for chronic elbow due to the risk of developing tolerance and potential weakening of tissues. That being said, they can also play a very important role in reducing your pain to promote your mobility and strengthening.
