The TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is the jaw joint, where your skull attaches to your jaw bone (mandible). This is a very complex joint that can be very problematic in many people. As mentioned above, TMJ disorders can arise from various factors, including jaw injury, arthritis or bruxism. This TMJ is an extremely powerful joint, so has a disc in the centre that assists with gliding movement and compression forces. Over a period of time or with injury this disc can become warn or damaged, leading to pain, clicking, popping and even arthritis.

Fortunately, many cases of bruxism and jaw pain and injuries we see here at the Dynamic Clinic is dealt with and treated successfully with conservative treatment modalities. If patients do not respond adequately to conservative treatment or the problem is getting worse, then consideration for TMJ joint injection therapy may be discussed. If patients are showing signs of advanced injury or disease then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic clarity of what it is that may be causing the issue.

If a cause of your jaw pain is suspected to be of an inflammatory origin, then you will be asked to provide a blood test and lab panel to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and TNFa, and maybe immunological makers.

Specialist MRI scan

At the Dynamic Clinic we can provide ultrasound imaging to look for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. However, on occasions we may require a more in-depth analysis. If a private MRI scan is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre. You will then be contacted and booked in within 5-10 days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by our colleagues. This report will then come back to the Dynamic Clinic and will we then discuss with you then best course of treatment for your compliant.
