Most cases of are triggered by a combination of overuse, repetitive strain, occupational strain, injury (or trauma), and inflammation to the structures of the wrist or hand. Severity varies, but below are some examples of common causes of wrist or hand pain and injury.

-

-

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ACUTE AND CHRONIC WRIST AND HAND PAIN
-
ACUTE PAIN is often due to direct trauma or injuries such as ligament tears, or sprains.
-
CHRONIC PAIN may be a results from progressive wear and tear, repetitive strain, chronic tendinitis or degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.
It is extremely important to be aware of more sinister causes of wrist or elbow pain, like inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis), gout or neurological dysfunction. Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged stiffness, increased swelling, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling, loss of strength, fatigue, weight loss and night pain.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON WRIST AND HAND CONDITIONS WE TREAT?
At our Birmingham Wrist & Hand Pain Clinics, we specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of musculoskeletal pain issues and injuries using a wide range of treatments, including regenerative and nonsurgical therapies. Below is a list of some of the most common issues we address in our clinics across Birmingham and Warwickshire.
Wrist tendinitis is a characterised by inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, often resulting from repetitive motion or overuse. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, and stiffness in the wrist area, making it difficult to perform daily activities. Treatment involves rest, ice, physical therapy to reduce inflammation and improve mobility. In some cases, a brace may be recommended to support the wrist during the healing

This condition occurs when bursa around the joints (small fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction) becomes inflamed. It commonly affects the knees, shoulders, hips, or elbows.
Wrist arthritis is a painful condition resulting from degenerative changes in the wrist joint. These changes can lead to inflammation, stiffness, and reduced mobility, making everyday activities challenging. It's essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and management of the pain associated with wrist arthritis. Early intervention can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall joint function.

A common condition whereby the sheath around the wrist and thumb tendons become inflamed. Also, known as De Quervain's Tenosynovitis.
Thumb joint pain and osteoarthritis a common condition that affects many individuals, leading to discomfort and reduced mobility in the thumb. This condition can make daily tasks challenging, as it often causes stiffness and swelling.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful wrist condition where the median nerve is compressed as it passes through a narrow passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. This compression can lead to pain, numbness and tingling in the hand, thumb, and finger

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR WRIST OR HAND PAIN & INJURY?
Fortunately, there are many different options for the treatment of wrist and hand pain or injury that can help and assist. These treatments include:

-

Fortunately, many cases of hand or wrist pain we see and treat here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine in Birmingham and Warwickshire are treated successfully with conservative treatment therapy. Less that 10% of our patients are considered for invasive therapeutic treatment. However, this does depend of the severity of causes. If patients do not respond adequately to conservative treatment or the problem is worsening, then consideration for injection therapy may be discussed. If patients are showing signs of advanced joint damage or joint osteoarthritis then we may discuss the need for an MRI scanning to get diagnostic conformation of what it is that may be causing the concern.
If an inflammatory or rheumatological cause of your joint pain is suspected, then you may be asked to get a lab panel and blood test done to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and maybe immunological makers.
Also, we have built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for pain and injury conditions. The most popular by far being P-PRP injection treatment, in which patients travel from all over the UK to see us for treatment (further information can also be found on the ORTHOBIOLOGICS link below).
Referral for Specialist Imaging or Private MRI Scans
At Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, our hand and injury pain clinic in Birmingham can provide ultrasound imaging to examine for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. But, occasionally we may require a more in-depth analysis. When a private scan is considered, we will put through a referral to our local Imaging Centre. You will then be contacted and booked in within 5-10 days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by our radiologist colleagues. This report will then come back to us and will we then interpret the images and discuss with you then best course of treatment for your complaint.
In some cases we may refer to our trusted surgical colleagues Mr Tom Lawrence (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) or Mr Gunaratnam Shyamalan (Consultant Hand Surgeon) for surgical opinion.
