What are the causes of hip pain?

Pain pain is very common and can cause huge amounts of pain and disability. Hip pain can range from mild localised discomfort through to significant levels of pain. Most cases of hip pain are triggered by a multitude of overuse, repetition, injury (or trauma), joint inflammation or cartilage damage/degeneration. Here are some examples of common causes of hip pain.

Hip pain and injury can be treated successfully in the vast majority of cases very simply with the correct advise and treatment. Fortunately, the vast majority of cases we see here at the Dynamic Clinic are treated successfully with conservative treatment. If patients do not respond adequately to conservative treatment or symptoms are increasing, then consideration for injection therapy may be discussed. If patients are showing signs of cartilage damage or degeneration then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic clarity of what it is that may be causing the issue.

If an inflammatory or rheumatological cause is suspected, then you may be asked to provide a lab panel and blood test to check for raised inflammatory markers - ESR, CRP and TNFa, and maybe immunological makers.

Referral for Specialist Imaging and Private MRI Scans

Here, at the Dynamic Clinic we can provide ultrasound imaging to assess for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. But, occasionally, we may require a more in depth analysis. When a private MRI is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre. You will then be contacted and booked in within 5-10 days. Following this scan, the report will be completed by our colleague Dr David Beale (Consultant Radiologist). This report will then come back to us and will we then dicuss with you then best course of action.

In some cases we may refer to our trusted colleagues Mr Shiv Jain (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon)  for opinion on hip surgery or total replacement.

Hip Pain Assessment

To help your hip pain, we firstly need to establish what may causing the problem. To do this we have to provide a thorough hip pain examination. If you have hip pain which is not getting better and affecting your function, it would be recommended to see a musculoskeletal professional. The clinician will be able to provide a full assessment, gather information to make a diagnosis and provide treatment and management strategies to resolve your pain or injury and get you back to full function again. At the Dynamic Clinic, our experienced musculoskeletal clinicians will be able to provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of hip complaints from sport injurie to hip arthritis.
