Recurrent Joint cortisone Injections in Comparison to PRP or Hyaluronic Acid for Joint Pain and OA.

Effects of recurrent joint cortisone injections for osteoarthritis at 3 months and beyond: review and analysis in comparison to otherinjectable treatments, like Prp and Hyaluronic acid. 2022.

Article by the Journal of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. December 2022.

Numerous randomised controlled trials were included in this study. These trials, compared recurrent cortisone injections, platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, Hyaluronic acid injections and saline placebo.

Often, cortisone injections are used to provide temporary pain relief for cases of osteoarthritis. However, in the majority of cases, this is not a long-term solution and repeated injections detrimental to cartilage health. This study also demonstrated that recurrent cortisone joint injections show no benefits in pain or function over placebo at 12–24 months.

To conclude, this study reports that recurrent cortisone injection treatments often provide inferior symptom relief compared with other injectables (including placebo) at 3 months and beyond. Other injectables (HA, PRP) often provided greater improvements in pain and function up to 24 months post-injection. Existing trials on recurrent joint cortisone injections lack sufficient follow-up data to assess disease progression and time-to-future interventions.

Many studies are now providing more and more evidence. The long-term benefits of treatments like platelet rich plasma (PRP and Hyaluronic acid, with a much higher safety profile. Ultimately showing reduced pain and inflammation with improved joint function and cartilage health.
