Effectiveness of PRP Treatment for Hair Loss. September 2023 Review of Evidence

Effectiveness of Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Androgenic Alopecia: September 2023. A Meta-Analysis.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), which is known as male or female pattern hair loss, is a very common condition that can be very difficult to treat. Here at the Dynamic Clinic, we have been treating hair loss for over 10 years, and thoroughly understand the impact this has on peoples lives. Currently one of the most discussed treatments for hair loss is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Evidence from clinical studies indicates that PRP is associated with stronger hair follicles and hair regrowth. Therefore, PRP injection treatment is viewed as a safe, minimally invasive, easy and cost-effective strategy for hair loss and alopecia.

This recent review looked to compare clinical evidence with ten trials with a total 555 treatment units were identified. They concluded that PRP treatment is an effective treatment for preserving hair and increasing hair density in patients. Please find study here.

It is important to understand that there is still not one simple, effective treatment for hair loss, but if treated early on, this can improve success rates short and long-term. We have also found multiple treatments can be effective in the treatment of hair loss. Examples being PRP treatment to strengthen hair follicles and stimulate regrowth, minoxidil to help in maintenance, and potentially DHT blocker therapy. They are pros and cons with all treatments, but we have found through performing thousand of PRP treatment is that PRP therapy is safe, well tolerated, and effective.

What is PRP therapy and how does it work for hair loss?

PRP (platelet rich plasma) is a popular, natural treatment that involves drawing a small amount of a patients blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting these concentrated platelets into areas of the body, such as the scalp, to promote tissue stimulation, healing and regeneration. PRP has been used as a treatment for many cases of hair loss, particularly in cases of androgenetic alopecia. The biological concept is that the growth factors in PRP therapy stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth. Obviously, like any hair treatment, the effectiveness can vary from person to person.
