Here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine in Birmingham and Solihull Henley-In-Ardenwe are offering dermal fillers injections performed by trusted and experienced medical doctors to treat a wide range of anti-ageing treatments. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to reduce the appearance of lines, folds and to treat wrinkles. Furthermore, dermal fillers are used to create volume and facial contouring to areas of the skin which have lost their volume.

Dermal fillers are frequently used in medical aesthetics and are highly popular for their ability to be used as volume enhancers and wrinkle fillers due to giving immediate and long lasting results. They are also often used in lip augmentation/enhancement, cheeks and under the eyes, often with amazing, fast, age-combating results. Here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we have put together a guide to help you learn about Dermal Fillers and to decide if they are the right choice for you.

There are many different types of dermal fillers out there to choose from, but we choose to use the JUVEDERM® range due to its outstanding reputation.

From the age of 25, the body decreases in the natural producing collagen and elastin. These two soft tissue proteins work together to keep skin firm and toned. It is this process along with free radical damage that processes the common signs of ageing we develop. These include fine lines and wrinkles, sunken cheeks and a loss of skin elasticity.

Dermal fillers are injections that are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that attracts and binds water in the skin. Dermal filler treatment is used to provide and restore volume which smooths wrinkles and fine lines of the skin, helping to give your skin a more full and youthful appearance.

As mentioned above, dermal fillers are used to restore volume which helps smooth wrinkles, promote definition and further contour the face. However, different types of fillers are used for different results and in many different areas.

With treating reduced volume, a thicker dermal filler is generally used that can provide effective volume and support for the cheeks. Superficial treatments like plumping or removing lines from lips, on the other hand, requires a much thinner dermal filler as the skin around that area is thinner.

Important to remember that dermal filler is very different from Botox. Botox is used as muscle paralysis and prevents movement of the small muscles that contribute to skin wrinkles. Here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine, we do not provide treatment for Botox, nor do we endorse this treatment. Different to Botox, dermal fillers create additional skin-plumping beneath the lines and wrinkles, creating a smoother surface and therefore restoring its youthful appearance.

The combination of using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment alongside fillers can be very beneficial and provide very good results.

Dermal fillers can be used to achieve a variety of results in different areas of the face. They are either commonly used on a superficial level to reduce fine lines or wrinkles OR they are used on a much deeper level to create facial contouring and sculpture. They are usually used in three main locations mentioned below:

Eyes area and forehead:
To reduce under-eye bags and the appearance of dark circles. Also, used to treat fine lines like crow's feet

Midface area and nose:
Smooth accordion lines (the fine lines that creep up the sides of the face towards the cheekbones) and folds. Also, used to add volume to sunken cheeks affected by gravity as collagen becomes less elastic.

Mouth region and chin/jaw:
Smooth out lines above the lips. Reduce the appearance of vertical lines above the lip
Add volume to the nasolabial folds around the mouth. Also used to correct the downturned corners of the mouth, and stop the jawline from sagging, alongside plumping and reduce chin creases.

Dermal fillers can last anywhere between 6 to 18 months depending on what hyaluronic acid is used. There are many different brands of hyaluronic acid out there like Juvederm® and Restylane®. Some suit people better than others.

Dermal fillers are very safe, but extremely rare should be understood, these including allergic reaction, infection or vascular occlusion. This is why your treatment should always be carried out by a specially trained professional. Before getting dermal filler treatment there are a few simple steps you can carry out to ensure success.

Reduce blood thinners like aspirin (Unless prescribed), vitamin E and any dietary supplements that include ginkgo, garlic, primrose oil and ginseng for 1 week prior to your treatment.

Also, avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen, also, Aleve, fish oil, alcohol and any product that can thin your blood for 2 days prior to your treatment.

Local side effects in and around the treated area may include:

  • Redness

  • Swelling

  • Bruising

  • Mild discomfort

  • Using the correct technique can help to minimise these side effects.

Using a calming agent like arnica, chamomile or taking Bromelain and Turmeric together can help to reduce the skin redness, swelling, tenderness, and/or itchiness that are common after dermal filler treatment. These will also be applied here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine. If your symptoms last longer than 3 days be sure to speak to your clinician.

Bruising can be common, although is short-lived. To help speed up the process you can use Arnica again to help reduce bruising and swelling.

DO NOT massage the treated areas as this can cause the filler to move, resulting in an uneven look and feel. Avoid applying heat to the treated area until any bruising or swelling has gone away. You should also try and avoid any activities that might cause you to blush or get red-faced. Exercising, consuming alcohol, going in the sauna or using a sunbed should all be avoided. Also, very cold temperatures.

Regular washing and showering is fine as long as you’re using gentle cleansers and moisturisers. Makeup and sunscreen should also be fine to use as long as they are applied gently.

It is important to do your research and think about what you want to achieve from the treatment. This will help you and the clinician to narrow down the type of filler you’ll want to use and ensure your treatment resolves your primary concerns.

Dermal fillers are safe and effective as long as you select a provider who will make every effort to minimise risk, work with you to address your concerns and follow up to ensure that you are well and satisfied, so make sure you know whom you’re dealing with.

If you are interested in having a filler treatment but don’t know where to start, Dynamic Regenerative Medicine will help you. From there you can speak to someone directly and begin the process of getting voluminous, wrinkle-free and younger-looking skin.
