Shadows or hollowing under the eyes, also known as tear trough defects, as they follow an arc shape starting from the corner of the eye where the tear duct is, tend to be accentuated by a weakening of a membrane under the skin and a loss of soft tissue in the cheek area.
Tear trough filler injections are an alternative to invasive treatment. The procedure involves a dermal filler product being injected into the deep part of the tear trough, which in turn will provide volume to the areas needed, making it appear flatter and smoother. Most products come with local anaesthetic within the formulation to reduce any pain, and recovery time is minimal – you can go right back to work after the procedure. Some side effects can be expected, such as bruising and redness, but these tend to subside within days to a week.
What are dermal fillers and how do they work?
Dermal fillers are made of natural synthetic Hyaluronic Acid. This helps to restore our skin to its former youthful appearance, as the material is injected into areas where it needs volume to look firmer. Dermal fillers come in different thicknesses, and in general, the thicker the product, the deeper it is injected into the dermal layer of the skin to help reduce the appearance of fine to deep lines and wrinkles, such as naso-labial folds (nose to mouth lines), fill scars, contour the cheeks and chin or augment lips.
As the skin ages, it gradually loses collagen and fat, thus, reducing the elastic properties of skin causing sagging. As a result our skin becomes thinner and more wrinkled and lined.
