TOPICAL DUTASTERIDE AND BIOTIN MESOTHERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS TREATMENT UK

Topical dutasteride mesotherapy is a new treatment exciting treatment for male and female pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia). The treatment is performed by applying locally to the scalp with dutasteride (anti-androgen medicine that combats hair loss. It can be used in both men and women.

So why mesotherapy over dutasteride pills? The answer to this question is simple;

1) topical mesotherapy with dutasteride has minimal systemic absorption and therefore a much lower risk of side effects like reduced libido and sexual dysfunction, 2) micro-injections can be a very effective targeted local treatment.

Dutasteride mesotherapy treatment can be used via 2 different methods:

1) micro-injections via clinician

2) topical mesotherapy with derma-roller

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

The technique of micro-injections with dutasteride consists of the application of dutasteride directly to the scalp so that it localises concentration at the level of the hair follicle. Here, the active ingredient exerts a direct action to the hair follicles that are suffering with thinning. The procedure is performed using only a micro-needle and scalp topical anaesthetic if needed, making the treatment fast, easy and very tolerable. It takes less than 5 minutes to perform the treatment and does not leave any visible marks, apart from mild redness that settles down fast. Furthermore, the patient can return to their activities straight away.

SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE OF TOPICAL DUTASTERIDE MESOTHERAPY

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?

Standard protocol can vary depending on the hair loss severity and the current treatments undertaking. It may be recommended to have one treatment per week for about 4-5 weeks, then bi-weekly, then once a month. Some patients do one treatment bi-weekly. Also, as dutasteride has a half-life of several weeks, the dutasteride microinjection procedure can be performed every 3-6 months depending on the factors above. Usually two to three annual sessions are sufficient to improve hair density. Your clinician will provide the guideline advised.

DOES THIS THERAPY HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?

Like any injection treatment, this can cause mild discomfort, which is minimised by applying anaesthesia before the procedure. The treated area may be a little sensitive in the following days, although it is usually very mild and doesn't require painkillers I’m most cases. The procedure has a local effect and the systemic absorption is minimal, so systemic side effects are minimal. Again, with any injection procedure, there is always a risk of infection or reactive, however, this is extremely uncommon.
