The Effects of Cartilage Regeneration with Biologics Treatment

Investigating the Efficacy of Biologics Treatment in Knee Osteoarthritis: Ultrasound Evaluation of Cartilage Regenerative

The Effects of Cartilage Regeneration with Biologics Treatment

Biologic treatments in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal practice (ortho-biologics) like growth factors, stem cells, and platelet-rich plasma show exciting potential in stimulating cartilage repair and regeneration, with reducing inflammation. This recent July 2024 study offers insights into how these orthobiological treatments work and their effectiveness in treating knee osteoarthritis with reducing pain inflammation, and consequently stimulating repair and healing.

Patients in this study had grade II and III knee osteoarthritis and received three treatments of joint injection treatment with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) 1 month apart. The clinical assessment involved the oxford knee score and visual analogue scale for pain on Days 0, 90, and 180. Cartilage thickness was measured with ultrasound at day 0 and post-PRP treatment at 90-180.

Joint cartilage thickness showed improvement from baseline all the way through progressive monitoring stages, indicating significant cartilage healing post-PRP administration.

Cartilage degeneration is a progressive irreversible condition that has proved extremely difficult to treat over many recent decades. This study highlights the value PRP in treating joint osteoarthritis, indicating the ability to reduce symptoms, enhance joint function, and promote articular cartilage regeneration. Furthermore, PRP is simple to produce, safe, inexpensive, follows no downtime and compliments conservative treatments like manual and physical therapy very well.

From clinical experience, with have been providing PRP therapy to our patients now for well over a decade now and how seen fantastic outcomes.
