New 2021 Double Blinded Study: The Effects of Lower Versus Higher Cell Number of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in Hair Density and Diameter in Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA).
Androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) is a very common condition in male and female patients that can benefit from the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
The objectives of the new study were to compare the safety, efficacy, and satisfaction of a lower or higher number of platelets via PRP treatment over a 6 month period.
Method of study - A double-blinded, placebo trial with PRP injections measured over six months. The results identified that at the end of a 6-month evaluation period, both groups demonstrated numerical increases in total hair densities, follicle diameters and terminal hair densities, as well as absolute and percent changes at the frontal and crown targeted sites. The improvements was shown to be more often in areas treated with higher platelet numbers. Furthermore, treatments were assessed by investigators and subjects as “satisfied” at month-3 and were associated with no adverse reactions.
In conclusion, injections with two therapeutic quantities of high and low quantities of platelets within PRP treatment were equally safe and efficacious among men and women for the treatment of hair loss, specifically androgenetic alopecia. It was shown that higher numbers of platelets can have a greater effect than lower number of platelets in regard to hair densities, follicle diameters and terminal hair densities at the month-6 evaluation period.
