Activated PRP treatment for hair loss (April 2023 trial)

Updated: Feb 27

A randomised double-blind trial (April 2023) looking at – Effect of platelet counts and activator in platelet-rich plasma (PRP), on the treatment of hair loss, specifically androgenetic alopecia: split-head comparison.

Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) is a common, progressive, non-scarring alopecia, characterised by miniaturisation of the hair follicles, due to alteration in the hair cycle dynamics, leading to terminal hair follicles becoming vellus ones.

Oral finasteride and topical minoxidil are the only approved drugs for treating this condition, with varied results and side-effects in some cases. Due to a limited number of effective treatments for hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may be an effective alternative natural treatment.

This recent study looks at the effect of activator in PRP and baseline platelet count on the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, with a high quality randomised, double-blind split-head comparative study. Patients with androgenetic alopecia were allocated into two groups; autologous activated PRP was injected in the right half of the affected scalp and autologous non-activated PRP was injected in the left half of the affected scalp and swapped over in the second group.

Treatments were done monthly for three months and followed up for the next three months. Effects were assessed by hair density, hair thickness, patient self-assessment and clinical photography. A total of 80 patients were included in the study.

It was found that activated PRP treatment produced significant improvement of hair density after four months and hair thickness at 6 months. An increase in platelet count led to a significant increase in hair density and hair thickness after three and four months respectively and a highly significant increase in both parameters at the end of the study. This study concluded that there is a significant effect of activator and platelet count of the platelet-rich plasma on hair density as well as hair thickness.
