Minoxidil and PRP Injection Treatment for Hair Loss

A Comparative Study of Efficacy of 5% Minoxidil and 5% Minoxidil Plus Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in Same Patient for Treatment of Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia).

Minoxidil and PRP Injection Treatment for Hair Loss

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) if the most common form of hair loss affecting many people. It is otherwise known as pattern hair loss and is characterised by androgen-related progressive hair follicular miniaturisation and thinning. We still do not have any cure for this huge concerning condition but there are treatment modalities which do help.

The aim of this recent May 2022 study was to compare the efficacy of 5% minoxidil and 5% minoxidil plus platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in same patient for the treatment of pattern hair loss.

Study methods This was a randomised study conducted on 50 patients. Scalp of each patient was divided into right side and left side, to compare the effectiveness of 5% minoxidil on the right side with combination of 5% minoxidil and intradermal PRP on the left side at an interval of 1 month for a period of 6 months. Clinical improvement was assessed monthly until 6 months by the serial hair pull test, global photography, patient satisfaction score, trichoscopic evaluation, and hair density.

Results for post-procedure at the end of 6 months revealed - the minoxidil 5% side showed good response in 41%, moderate in 20%, and poor in 39%. I’m comparison the PRP + minoxidil 5% side showed good response in 59% moderate in 16% (n = 7), and poor in 25% of the patients.

Thus study concluded that the combination consists of 5% minoxidil and intradermal PRP injections is a safe simple effective treatment in hair loss. In our clinical opinion, having provided this treatment for several years, is that it is very important to select the right candidates who are unlikely to be more successful to treatment. there are many different factors which contribute towards hair loss, and it is fundamentally important to maintain and preserve as well as stimulating hair thickness. Furthermore, this study may not have identified all important additional factors to help promote better and higher rates of success. Examples being, PRP processing, platelet concentration, additional factors like DHT blockers. Further information can be found here.
