WHAT IS PRP TREATMENT?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used in many medical procedures over the years, and its safety is well established. Examples include wound healing, oral surgery, joint and injury treatment, general medicine etc... In addition, PRP has vastly developed in cosmetic medicine, specifically hair restoration and skin anti-ageing rejuvenation. PRP is injected into the skin to stimulate new collagen production and to re-energise your cells. Within aesthetics, it is often used as an anti-ageing treatment and can also be used alongside dermal fillers, vitamins and anti-oxidants for an improved result. 

PRP therapy is a regenerative treatment that involves the simple extraction and then injection of the patient’s own platelets for the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles or scars in the face, hands, neck and of course scalp for hair loss. Previously in the cosmetic world, it has been known as the “vampire facelift” (a term trademarked by Alabama cosmetic surgeon Charles Runels, it is much less invasive than plastic surgery, takes about 20 minutes for each treatment, offers improvements for up to 18 months and best of all it is completely natural. PRP injection treatment for cosmetics, skin rejuvenation and hair loss is provided only using your own cells.

Platelet-rich plasma is obtained from a blood sample taken here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine. This is then specifically separated to contain platelets which work in the body to clog up cuts and tears. Platelets also have growth factors on the surface which stimulate collagen production when injected into the skin.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) has been utilised in aesthetic medicine in many different places across the world for skin rejuvenation and to slow down the ageing process and face. Science supports the use of PRP for the augmentation and regeneration of hard and soft tissues. PRP is the source of concentrated platelet content present in the blood. Apart from assisting blood clotting, platelets also release growth factors that assist the human body to repair itself by stimulating cells to regenerate new tissue. Today, platelet-rich plasma can easily be separated from the blood, through a process of centrifugation. Using your enriched plasma permits the body to heal faster and more efficiently. Because your plasma (autologous) is used, there is no danger of disease transmission, anaphylaxis or neoplasia. In general medicine, platelet transfusion is common practice in treating blood platelet disorders, including very low counts associated with bleeding. 

Case studies reported in Europe, England, Asia, Japan, and South Africa have demonstrated consistent rejuvenation of facial ageing, including wrinkling in persons with modest grades of photo- or chronological ageing. Patient selection is important and skin diseases have to be excluded. Improvement of skin texture and tone can be expected, these features are noticeable within 3 weeks, and the process can be enhanced by the addition of appropriate Cosmeceutical. Benefits include non-allergenic properties and ease of administration.

Q: How long does the PRP procedure take?

A: The treatment will take around 30-40 minutes.

Q: How many PRP treatments will I need?

A: For the best result, we recommend up to three treatments, 4-6 weeks apart, with top-ups at 6-24 months.

Q: What results can I expect from PRP rejuvenation treatment?

A: You should notice fullness and improvements in skin texture and tone are noticeable within 3 weeks. Full collagen regeneration takes 3 months. Mild swelling may be seen immediately. Over the days and weeks, the platelets will release growth factors and pre stem cells which will assist in more collagen growth.

Q: What happens during your treatment of PRP

A: Here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine we will assess your skin condition, and come up with an action plan together. We will then perform a simple skin sample, and recommend a sensible treatment with a reasonable outcome. Pre-treatment photographs are taken.

Your skin is cleansed and prepared. Local anaesthetic cream is applied to minimize pain.  Blood is taken from your arm and placed in a test tube which is then centrifuged.

The Platelet Rich Plasma is then prepared and activated. It is then initially injected into the areas discussed prior to treatment. The remainder of the plasma is then injected all over the rest of the skin area to be treated.

PRP facial rejuvenation can be a one-off treatment, but further micro-injections can be re-performed at 4-6 weekly intervals for lines and wrinkles if the client desires this. It can also be used as part of a treatment program.

Q: Are there any possible side effects of PRP treatment to skin rejuvenation?

A: Minimal swelling is to be expected, bruising and redness for 12-24 hours. A bruise at the needle site may be visible for 2-3 days.

Q: Are there any possible side effects of PRP treatment to skin rejuvenation?

A: Results are normally visible at three weeks and improve gradually over ensuing months with improvement in texture and tone. This is due to the cause of action of the injected platelets and growth factors.

Skincare and light therapies can enhance the results.

Advanced wrinkling cannot be reversed and a minimal improvement is predictable in persons with a heavy drug, alcohol and tobacco usage. Severe scarring may not respond. Further plasma treatment is also popular and safe.

Results may not be visible immediately. You may notice swelling from the fluid is what you will see and feel first. Once the swelling has subsided you will not see much change at all. Over a few weeks, the platelets will stimulate the growth factors which will assist in more collagen growth.

Q: How many PRP treatments are required?

A: This will depend upon the health and age of your skin. Normally it is advised to have 2-3 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart. However, your clinician will determine your treatment protocol according to your skin condition.
