What are Dermal Fillers? Dynamic Regenerative Medicine. Solihull
Dermal fillers frequently used in medical aesthetics and are highly popular due to their ability to be used as volume enhancers and wrinkle fillers. They are also frequently used in lip augmentation / enhancement, cheeks and under the eyes, often with amazing, fast, age-combating results. Here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine we have put together a guide to help you learn about Dermal Fillers and to decide if they are the right choice for you.
What are Dermal Fillers? From the age of 25, the body decreases in the natural producing collagen and elastin. These two soft tissue proteins work together to keep skin firm and toned. It is this process along with free radical damage that processes the common signs of aging we develop. These includes fine lines and wrinkles, sunken cheeks and a loss of skin elasticity.
Dermal fillers are injections that are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that attracts and binds water in the skin. Dermal filler treatment is used to provide and restore volume which smooths wrinkles and fine lines of the skin, helping to give your skin a more full and youthful appearance.
How do dermal fillers work?
As mentioned above, dermal fillers are used to restore volume which helps smooth wrinkles, promote definition and further contour to the face. However, different types of fillers are used for different results and in many different areas. With treating reduced volume, a thicker dermal filler is generally used that can provide effective volume and support for the cheeks. Superficial treatments like Plumping or removing lines from lips, on the other hand, requires a much thinner dermal filler as the skin around that area is thinner. Important to remember that dermal filler is very different Botox. Botox is used as a muscle paralysis and prevents movement of the small muscles that contribute to skin wrinkles. Here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine we do not provide treatment for Botox, neither do we endorse this treatment. Different to Botox, Dermal fillers create additional skin plumping beneath the lines and wrinkles, creating a smoother surface and therefore restoring its youthful appearance. The combination of using Platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment alongside fillers can be very beneficial and provide very good results. Where are they usually used? Dermal fillers can be used to achieve a variety of results in different areas of the face. They are usually used in three main locations mentioned below: Eyes area: To reduce under eye bags and the appearance of dark circles. Also, used to treat fine lines.
Mid Face Area: Smooth accordion lines (the fine lines that creep up the sides of the face towards the cheekbones) and folds. Also, used to add volume to sunken cheeks affected by gravity as collagen becomes less elastic.
Mouth region: Smooth out line above the lips. Reduce the appearance of vertical lines above the lip Add volume to the nasolabial folds around the mouth. Also used to correct the downturned corners of the mouth, and Stop the jawline from sagging, alongside plumping and reduce chin creases.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Dermal fillers can last anywhere between 6 to 18 months depending on what hyaluronic acid used. There are many different brands of hyaluronic acid out there like Juvederm® and Restylane®. Some suit people better than other. Before your treatment Dermal fillers are verysafe, and allergic reactions are extremely rare, so long as your treatment is carried out by a specially trained professional. Before getting dermal filler treatment there are a few simple steps you can carry out to ensure success. Reduce blood thinners like aspirin (Unless prescribed), vitamin Enand any dietary supplements that include ginko, garlic, primrose oil and ginseng for 1 weeks prior to your treatment.
Also avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen, also, Aleve, fish oil, alcohol and any product that can thin your blood for 2 days prior to your treatment.
Do dermal fillers have side affects? Local side effects in and around the treated area may include:
Using the correct technique can help to minimise these side effects.
How to help minimise any aide effects of your treatment Using a calming agent like arnica, chamomile or taking Bromelain and Turmeric together can help to reduce the skin redness, swelling, tenderness, and/or itchiness that are common after dermal filler treatment. These will also be applied here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine. If your symptoms last longer than 3 days be sure to speak to your clinician.
Bruising can be common, although is short lived. To help speed up the process you can use Arnica again to help reduce bruising and swelling.
DO NOT massage the treated areas as this can cause the filler to move, resulting in an uneven look and feel. Avoid applying heat to the treated area until any bruising or swelling has gone away. You should also try and avoid any activities that might cause you to blush or get red faced. Exercising, consuming alcohol, going in the sauna or using a sun bed should all be avoided. Also, very cold temperatures.
Regular washing and showering is fine as long as you’re using gentle cleansers and moisturisers. Makeup and sunscreen should also be fine to use as long as they are applied gently.
