Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections are and effective line of treatment for relief from joint-pain caused from degenerative changes like osteoarthiritis . The body naturally creates hyaluronic acid to lubricate the joints, protect the cartilage and keep the joints functioning smoothly. It also acts as a natural shock absorber, keeping the bones from bearing the full force of impact when putting stress on the joint. Osteoarthritis is a condition where the hyaluronic acid in the affected joint doesn’t function as it should. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections therefore add to your body’s natural supply, replenishing the joint’s ability to lubricate itself and absorb shocks.

We stress to our patients that this procedure is best delivered as a preventative measure! Whereby, it’s treatment is to slow the progression of degenerative changes within a joint. Once the joint is in a state of advanced arthritis this can hold little value and surgical option is of value. However, this being said, if the patient is reluctant to undergo surgery, then this can be a treatment option.

Procedure Very fast, easy to perform Injection. With no down time or recover needed. You can move around the same day as normal. Sometimes local anaesthetic (lidocaine 1%) is administered but it’s not always needed. The hyaluronic acid  is then injected into the joint in a painless process. This substance can then be distributed around this joint.  Specialists dealing with intra-articular injections generally instruct their patients to maintain a simple diary of pain for at least a week’s duration after the injection.

Outcomes The intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections are administered with the aim of providing long term pain relief. The most common short-term side effects are minor pain at the injection site and minor build-up of joint fluid. These get better within a few days.
